Cut Tree Care
Even though the Christmas tree you choose will probably be a needle holding variety it will benefit from following a few rules when caring for your tree. This will keep your tree looking its best throughout the Festive season.
If a tree is cut and left outside it will last for ages. It’s only when you bring it indoors and into an unnaturally warm environment that it starts to deteriorate. Christmas trees are like cut flowers, they need water and can drink up to 2 litres a day. So make sure the water level is checked daily.
Before taking your tree indoors cut a piece off the bottom of the trunk, around 5cm. This opens the seal and will allow the tree to drink. If you’re not taking it indoors straight away, leave it in a garage or sheltered area standing in a bucket of water. This will help to keep it fresher. We will quite happily cut a slice off for you when we net your tree. Then all you have to do when you get home is put it in water. If you leave it out of water for over 2 hours you may need to cut off another slice as it could re-seal.
When you are ready to take the tree indoors to decorate, (leave the netting on as it’s easier to carry), make sure you have a water retaining stand (you can buy one when you get your tree, our little helpers will advise you as to which is the best one).
Place the Christmas tree away from all direct heat sources. If the only place it will go is next to a radiator, either turn the radiator down or off altogether.
Once the tree is in position fill the tree stand with water and take off the netting then let the tree relax for a few hours or overnight. If it’s going to be in a corner you could always trim some branches off the back, this will make more room as you push it further in to the corner. Before doing this though, make sure you find out which part of the tree gives the best look.
The usual date for dressing the tree is 11th/12th of December. If you leave taking the tree inside until this date and follow the care details your tree should last for the 14 days. Please be aware that your tree will dry out whatever you do, over the Festive period. But as Christmas trees are a natural, growing product each tree will behave differently and may shut down earlier than 14 days even though you have carried out all of our tree care recommendations. It will look very pale, dry, it will be brittle and the branches will droop. It’s not a good look.
So, as we guarantee our trees for 14 days from point of purchase and if your Christmas tree appears to lose its mojo earlier we will replace it (on production of a valid till receipt). We will deliver another tree to you and collect the old one, free of charge.
